EDITORS’ NOTE (2026)

Dear Reader,
We are excited to present the 2026 issue of the California Lutheran University Gumby Writing Project. As we navigate a cultural landscape that often feels deeply divided, holding onto our shared sense of community is more important than ever. Between academic demands and the constant noise of the modern world, it is easy to feel disconnected. As a campus rooted in Lutheran values, we have the opportunity to keep building one another up.
In that spirit, the theme for this issue is “The Stories We Carry.” We asked the community to reflect on the stories that shaped how they move through the world, and we were deeply moved by the responses. We received such a wide variety of work, but found a common thread: they all plant the seeds of empathy. Because these stories are personal, some pieces touch on heavy life themes, including grief, fear, and moments of profound transition. We ask that you approach these pages with an open mind, grace, and a willingness to understand. There is a very real power to words. By speaking our truths, we remind one another that we are not alone. Let these stories ground us in our shared humanity.
Most importantly, an immense thank you to the courageous individuals who submitted their work and brought this issue to life. You are the ones who made this publication. You took a leap of faith with this project, and trusted us to help share your story. With your courage, you have shed light on both your unique perspective and your shared experiences that bring our community closer.
It has been such a privilege to work on this collection with this amazing group of people. We hope this collection inspires you as it did us.
